Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships to Undergraduates

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM480,000 to 12 students pursuing their bachelor’s degree in local universities based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities, for the 32nd year since the scholarships were launched in 1990.

The awards worth RM10,000 each per annum were presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, witnessed by LPF Trustees, Datuk CS Tang, Datin Wira Dr Tan Niap Ming and Ms Chow Mun Seong, and the students’ families on 21 December 2022.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng said in her speech, “The scholars will undergo training in soft skills such as problem-solving and communication, and undergo internships at Lion Group companies during semester breaks to prepare them for the corporate world. They will join the Group upon graduation, and will be attached to companies in the various divisions such as retail, branding, mining, steel, and property development, according to their field of study.”

LPF has sponsored a total of 503 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM12.3 million and contributed another RM39 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM51.3 million todate.

Lion-Parkson Foundation & MOV Asia Sponsor CSR Event

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and MOV Asia Sdn Bhd sponsored a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event for single parents and their children at Pusat Pembelajaran Komuniti Chow Kit on 11 December 2022.

Organised by Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), the event was the first collaboration between MOV Asia and MPO to bring music to the community in an informal setting. MPO staged a string quartet music performance for the audience of 20 parents and 40 children and guests.

MOV Asia, the representative of MOV Korea in Southeast Asia brought in a diagnostic medical device known as MOV Hi-Life for blood testing and analysis for the parents while the children were entertained by the music performance and a Question & Answer session. The parents and children were each presented with an angpow by LPF and MOV Asia Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; and goody bags and refreshments from MOV Asia. MPO CEO, Puan Hassina Begam Abdul Gani was present at the event.

Donation to Lion-Parkson Foundation

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng donated RM90,928 from the sale of her painting worth RM68,000 from her art and calligraphy exhibition in Seoul, South Korea from 1-21 August 2022 and the balance from the generous contributions of her friends, to LPF.

Puan Sri Chelsia presented the cheque for the amount to LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang witnessed by newly appointed LPF Trustee, Ms Chow Mun Seong at the Board of Trustees meeting on 28 September 2022.

LPF also welcomed Ms Chow Mun Seong to its Board of Trustees with effect from 24 August 2022. Ms Chow is the former Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) and has worked for almost 30 years with ACCCIM.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Sponsors MH-Bifrost Run

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) is sponsoring RM5000 worth of Parkson gift vouchers for the MH-Bifrost Run Against Breast Cancer by the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) Breast Cancer Surgery Unit to raise funds for its Breast Cancer Resource Centre (BCRC).

LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng is the Patron for the UMMC Candy Girls Breast Cancer Support Group that was set up by the BCRC to assist breast cancer patients, survivors and their family members, especially in the B40 group.

Puan Sri Chelsia is also an Ambassador for the MH-Bifrost Run, a 5-km night run at University of Malaya Arena Stadium on 29 October 2022. There are 2 categories for Junior (below 18 years of age) and Student (18 years and above), and Public (open to all ages) with registration fee of RM70 and RM75 respectively. Puan Sri had attended the Press Conference to promote Pink October (Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign) and the Run on 2 September 2022.

Learning Session for Lion-Parkson Foundation Scholars

The Group’s training arm, CeDR Corporate Consulting organised a Learning Session for Lion-Parkson Foundation scholars from 23 to 25 August 2022.

The scholars were given insights into Lion Group businesses and taken on a site visit to Amsteel Mills in Bukit Raja, Klang to learn about its operations. Ex-scholars, Production Executive at Amsteel Klang, Er Hong An and Account Executive based in Headoffice, Lee Chow Yee shared their experience as scholars and the Group’s employees now with the current batch of scholars.

An action packed leadership programme for the scholars was held with the aim of challenging them to discover and enhance their leadership capabilities, thus creating future leaders for the Group. Some of the key takeaways from the program included problem solving and coordination skills, as well as empathy, communication and presentation skills.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Donates to Four Beneficiaries

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) donated a total of RM25,000 to four charitable organisations namely Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children, Selangor; Childhood Cancer Caring Society of KL; Malaysian Advocates for Cerebral Palsy and Pertubuhan Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Shan Dai on 13 June 2022.

The donation was part of the RM44,160.30 raised in the form of cash sponsorships and registration fees from the virtual run, “Jom! Run for Care” which took place from 15 October 2021 to 15 January 2022 with a total of 231 participants. The balance of the funds raised from the Run will be allocated for the Foundation’s scholarships for university students and medical assistance for the less fortunate.

LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the donations to the 4 charities with the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children receiving RM10,000 whilst other charities receiving RM5,000 each.

Lion-Parkson Foundation was launched in 1990 to provide financial assistance for education, medical aid and charity. Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 491 students through our scholarship and sponsorship programmes worth RM11.6 million, and spent about RM9.8 million on medical treatment for 1,052 patients, purchase of medicine for medical camps, and medical equipment and dialysis machines. The Foundation has also contributed another RM28.9 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM50.3 million todate.

Jom! Run For Care

Jom! Run For Care

The Jom! Run For Care virtual run from 15 Oct-15 Dec 2021 had been extended to 15 Jan 2022. We would like to thank all participants who ran for charity. We wish to inform that the last of the items for the race kit i.e. the t-shirts for the qualifiers were received on Tuesday, 22 March 2022 after the unforeseen delay by the supplier due to the lack of manpower. Checkpoint has started to courier the race kits to all participants beginning from 23 March 2022. We thank everyone for your patience and once again, for your kind participation in the run to raise funds for charity.

LPF Donates Medical Equipment to Hospital Ampang

Lion-Parkson Foundation has been contributing funds and medical equipment to charitable organisations and hospitals to support our healthcare system in the fight against Covid-19. On 27 September 2021, the Foundation donated patients monitors, syringe pumps and oxygen concentrators worth about RM60,000 to Hospital Ampang. The donations are part of Lion Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to support and provide essential medical equipment which will ease our healthcare system and help Covid-19 patients with respiratory and other issues.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Board of Trustees Meeting

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) had its Board of Trustees meeting on 30 June 2021. As the country is under MCO 3.0, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Trustees, Datuk CS Tang, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu, Dr Chua Siew Kiat and Datin Wira Dr Tan Niap Ming; and the management team participated in the meeting remotely. The meeting discussed the Foundation’s financial performance, launching of its scholarship programme for 2021 applicants, approved sponsorships for medical treatment for applicants to the Fund, and other activities including Banting Home for Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children.

   

2021 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

2021 CNY Charity Sale successfully raised RM55,525 from the sale of nearly 1,000 pieces of cow caricature and 4,500 pieces of CNY greeting cards by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng. On 4 May 2021, Puan Sri Chelsia presented cheques totalling to RM42,900 to the six schools namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kwang Hua High School and Sekolah Menengah Chung Hua (PSDN) Klang that had been participating in the yearly Calligraphy Charity Sale. Each school received RM7,150, which will benefit 12 needy students; 5 students in junior middle school (Forms 1-3) will receive RM450 each and 7 students from senior middle school (Forms 4-6) will receive RM700 each. From the total amount raised from the calligraphy sale, RM12,320 was from the sale to members of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Chambers of Commerce & Industry (KLSCCCI) and donated to KLSCCCI Welfare Committee for education, on 18 March 2021.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Appoints New Trustee

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Datin Wira Dr Tan Niap Ming to its Board of Trustees with effect from 11 January 2021.

Dr Tan specialises in Ophthalmology and is the Head and Resident Consultant Comprehensive Ophthalmologist and Refractive Surgeon at the Eye and Lasik Centre in Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur. She has 3 decades of experience as a medical officer and eye specialist, and is actively involved in the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology and the Society’s organising committees for several meetings and congresses. Dr Tan is the recipient of a distinguished service award and an achievement award in the field of Ophthalmology.

The Board of Trustees is confident that Dr Tan with her years of experience, service and attributes, will contribute in enhancing the competencies and effectiveness of the Board and LPF.

LPF was incorporated in 1985 to administer and disburse funds for education, scientific and charitable purposes including financial assistance for medical treatment. Since its launch in 1990, the Foundation has contributed about RM41 million to various charitable causes.

2021 Chinese New Year Calligraphy Sale

For the past 11 years, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd had organized a yearly Chinese New Year (CNY) Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in a few schools within Klang Valley.

For 2021, LPF was not able to organize the Calligraphy Charity Sale in Parkson stores due to the Covid-19 pandemic and strict SOPs on public gatherings and events. Hence, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng decided to adapt to the new normal whereby she worked from home in producing her calligraphy pieces to usher in the Lunar New Year. These pieces including cute caricatures of the cow by Puan Sri Chelsia and her family were on sale in Parkson stores at Pavilion KL, 1 Utama Shopping Mall, Sunway Velocity, Nu Sentral and Klang Parade, and also on Parkson Online in aid of charity. These pieces were also purchased by Chinese Chambers members and Puan Sri Chelsia’s friends for charity.

The Charity Sale successfully raised RM55,525 with the expenses i.e red calligraphy paper, custom-made red card, ink, lamination and courier charges borne by Puan Sri Chelsia.

Over the past 11 years, from 2010 to 2020, the CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale had raised more than RM2.55 million to assist needy students in the participating schools.

Medical Aid

In 2020, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) had disbursed a total of RM300,078 to assist 14 individuals in need of medical treatment and equipment; as well as organisations namely Red Crescent Malaysia (Selangor), Sabah Covid-19 Fund, National Autism Society of Malaysia and Malaysian Association for the Blind.

Sabah COVID-19 Fund

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) donated RM31,000 whilst LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and friends contributed RM15,000 to Sabah COVID-19 Fund for the purchase of 2 High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) worth RM46,000.



The fundraising charity drive was jointly organised by Yayasan Sin Chew and Sabah Medical Association (SAMA). On 23 October 2020, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the mock cheques to Yayasan Sin Chew CEO, Mr Low Kon Sin (left) at Lion Office Tower. Also present was Group Tax Senior Manager, Mr Koh Yong Heng (right).

Malaysian Association for the Blind

LPF also donated RM5,000 to Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) through the charity programme organized by Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI). On 6 October 2020, LPF representative Ms Yee Mei Kuen (3rd from left in photo) together with other sponsors presented the mock cheque of RM9,200 to MAB Service Unit Manager, Ms Jacqueline Sarlah Emanuelle at Kompleks MAB in Brickfields.

The sponsors were briefed on MAB and its activities to give them a better understanding on visually impaired persons and taken on a tour of MAB building.

LPF Contributes to NASOM

Our Foundation contributed RM5,000 to a charity drive organised by Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI) for the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM). On 21 September 2020, Amsteel Mills Manager, Mr Ng Ah Seng (left), and together with other sponsors from MSI presented the mock cheque of RM13,000 which included LPF’s RM5,000 contribution to NASOM’s representative, Puan Suraya at NASOM Vocational Centre in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

LPF Awards Scholarship

This is the 30th year running that the Foundation is awarding scholarships to deserving students. The awards were presented by Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng witnessed by Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang and the students’ families. The undergraduates who will be pursuing their bachelor’s degree in local institutions of higher learning received scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum for the duration of their studies.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng in her speech said, “We hope that our contribution will help the students to be free of financial constraints and be able to focus on their studies and participate in activities to develop their leadership qualities.”

Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 481 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM11.4 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM28.7 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM40.1 million todate.

LPF Donates Kidney Dialysis Machine

Lion-Parkson Foundation donated one unit of dialysis machine worth of RM35,600 to Pusat Dialisis NKF-Nanyang in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur in February 2020. Todate, our Group has donated a total of 23 dialysis machines worth RM875,000 to National Kidney Foundation and other charitable organisations.

Aid to Banting Home

The Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting has been severely impacted by the Movement Control Order which was implemented by the Government effective 18 March 2020. The Home’s plight was shared on Parkson’s facebook and with our colleagues and friends who donated generously to the Home. Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and her friends also contributed cash, breads and cookies from Hogan, adult diapers, washing detergent, toiletries and hand sanitizer to the Home.

Hari Raya Cheer for Single Mothers

LPF presented Hari Raya contribution amounting to RM12,300 to 50 single mothers registered with the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng handed the contribution which comprised Parkson vouchers worth RM150, cookies, ‘sarong’, face masks and hand sanitizer to two mothers who were present at a simple ceremony at Lion Office Tower on 11 June 2020.

Present at the event were Deputy Director General of JKM, Puan Fatimah Zuraidah binti Saleh and Director - Community, Cik Nor Tipah binti Majin; Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) Vice Presidents, Ms Shirley Tay and Ms Valerie Choo; Deputy Treasurer General, Dato’ Winnie Lim and member, Dato’ Grace Lee.

The mothers also received RM100 ‘duit raya’ each sponsored by MRCA. This RM5,000 ‘duit raya’ was part of the funds Puan Sri Chelsia helped to raise for charity through the sale of her calligraphy/art pieces at MRCA’s Chinese New Year Banquet on 13 February 2020.

This is the third time that LPF and Parkson are collaborating with JKM. Earlier plans for a ‘buka puasa’ were replaced by the simple Hari Raya event due to Covid-19 pandemic.

LPF Hands Over RM60,000 to Malaysian Red Crescent

On 15 May 2020, LPF handed over a total contribution of RM60,000 to Malaysian Red Crescent Selangor State (MRCSS) in support of the assistance work extended by MRCSS to hospitals, clinics and the underprivileged to help overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the donation which comprised RM30,000 in cash from LPF and RM30,000 in kind which included hand sanitizers from LPF and personal contribution of medical supplies i.e. surgical masks, thermometers and PPE (personal protective equipment) suits from Puan Sri and her friends to MRCSS Acting Chairman, Mr Nanthakumar a/l Rajasingam at Lion Office Tower.

LPF Chairman Donates Art Pieces for Charity

Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng helped Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) to raise about RM35,000 for charity through the sale of her calligraphy/art pieces at MRCA’s Chinese New Year Banquet on 13 February 2020.

Puan Sri Chelsia drew 24 pieces of flowers representing the 24 festivals in the Chinese calendar and 18 roses in view of the following day being Valentine’s day as well as a piece of calligraphy which were purchased by the guests at the event.

2020 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

For the 11th consecutive year, LPF and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd assisted five independent schools in the Klang Valley, namely Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL), Confucian Private Secondary School, Kuen Cheng High School, Kwang Hua Private High School, and Tsun Jin High School to organize a Chinese New Year Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

The Charity Sale was held at 8 participating Parkson stores namely 1 Utama Shopping Centre, IOI City Mall Putrajaya, Klang Parade, NU Sentral, OUG Shopping Centre, Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, and Sunway Velocity Mall. The students from the 5 schools sold their Calligraphy works and staged Chinese orchestra performances at these Parkson stores over 2 weekends prior to the Lunar New Year celebration in January 2020.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships

For the 29th year running, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM400,000 to 10 students for the entire duration of their studies based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities.

The awards were presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng witnessed by LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang and the students’ families and friends on 23 August 2019. The undergraduates received scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng in her speech said, “The awards are in line with Lion Group’s aspiration to contribute to the country’s educational and human resources development in order to achieve economic growth. We hope that our contribution will help the students to be free of financial worry and be able to focus on their studies and participate in activities to develop their leadership qualities”.

Including the latest scholarship holders, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 468 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM10.9 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM27.8 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM38.7 million todate.

Contributes to Medical Camp

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) sponsored the cost of medication worth RM7,792.63 for the medical camp organized by the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Sri Sinar, Kuala Lumpur on 7 July 2019 to provide free medical check-up and medication for nearby residents.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the Fund’s sponsorship to the President of Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise, Mr Anthony Pinto. The camp was officiated by Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, YB Hannah Yeoh; with other partners present namely Ministry of Health Malaysia (Dental), Implementation Coordination Unit, Department of Social Welfare (JKM), MySalam, Peka B40, National Cancer Society of Malaysia and Pfizer etc.

The annual medical camp has been supported by Lion Group Medical Assistance Fund (LGMAF) for the past 11 years. LGMAF is now merged with LPF to streamline and facilitate the management and disbursement of funds by the Group under LPF.

2019 Chinese New Year Calligraphy Charity Sale

For the tenth consecutive year, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd assisted five independent schools in the Klang Valley, namely Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL), Confucian Private Secondary School, Kuen Cheng High School, Kwang Hua Private High School, and Tsun Jin High School to organize a Chinese New Year (CNY) Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

The Charity Sale was held at 9 participating Parkson stores namely 1 Utama Shopping Centre, IOI City Mall Putrajaya, Klang Parade, NU Sentral, OUG Shopping Centre, Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity Mall, and Suria KLCC. The students from the 5 schools had sold their Calligraphy works and staged Chinese orchestra performances at these Parkson stores over 3 weekends prior to the Lunar New Year celebration in February 2019.

At today’s presentation ceremony, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; and Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang presented cheques for the total amount of RM237,247.31 raised from the Charity Sale to the 5 schools.

The expenses for the Calligraphy sale and performances by the students in the Parkson stores were sponsored by Lion-Parkson Foundation and Parkson Corporation while the special paper for writing the Calligraphy pieces was provided by Xian’s Calligraphy Centre founded by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng.

Since the Charity Sale started 10 years ago in 2010, it has raised a total of RM2,382,643.97 to help the needy students in these schools.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Donates RM50,000 to Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Malaysia

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) donated RM50,000 to Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Malaysia (YKNM) to assist the Yayasan in its charitable work in health (medical), welfare, education, voluntary bodies, and natural disasters amongst others, recently.

At the presentation ceremony held on 15 March 2019, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the donation of RM50,000 to Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of YKNM, YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail, witnessed by YKNM Trustees and CEO of YKNM, YBhg Datin Paduka Che Asmah Ibrahim.

2019 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

For the 10th consecutive year, Lion-Parkson Foundation and Parkson assisted five schools in the Klang Valley namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL) and Kwang Hua Private High School to organize the Chinese New Year Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools over 3 weekends in January 2019.

To attract shoppers to purchase their calligraphy pieces, the students staged Calligraphy demonstrations, Chinese orchestra and lion dance performances at nine Parkson stores namely 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Suria KLCC, NU Sentral, OUG Shopping Centre, Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity, IOI City Mall, and Klang Parade.

Run Raised RM1.2 Million

The Charity Run raised RM1.2 million from the participation fees, donations and contributions by sponsors, business associates and friends, Lion Group employees and the public. At the cheque presentation ceremony on 23 October 20018, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented part of the proceeds raised to its charity partners, NCSM for the amount of RM45,000 and Kasih Hospice Care Society for the amount of RM10,000; received by NCSM Vice President, Ms Clare Ratnasingham and Kasih Hospice Care Society Deputy President, Dr Siow Chih Peng respectively.

In line with the Foundation’s objective to promote education, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng also presented a sum of RM25,400 to KLSCCCI Education Fund, received by the Chamber’s Council Member and Chairman of Digital Economy Committee, Mr Teoh Kok Lin.

Present at the ceremony were Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang; LPF Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat; representatives from major sponsors and several members and cancer patients from NCSM who had participated in the 1km Run for Cancer. Presentations to other beneficiaries such as the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor will be made later upon the completion of its expansion, as well as to the Foundation’s ongoing scholarship program next year.

Parkson Corporation was the title sponsor for the Run with Venue Sponsor - Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, 988 FM – Official Radio Station, Spritzer - Official Drink, Partners - Celebrity Fitness and Parkson Card, and major sponsors such as Polo, Yinson, Akemi, Hi-Rev lubricants, Flamoff, Hwa Tai, Bonia, Jean Perry, Voir, Hawkeye, Chester, Tiny Button, Laneige, Shiseido, Kose, Larrie and Papermate.

Lion Parkson Run 2018

About 4,000 people gathered at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 30 September 2018 for the third Lion Parkson Run, organised by Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) with Lee Chong Wei Foundation as the co-organiser to raise funds for education and charity, including the expansion of the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor; National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) and other charitable causes.

Lion Group Executive Chairman cum Parkson Group Chairman, Tan Sri William Cheng and LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng flagged off the runners for the 10km Competitive Run and 3km Run. Present at the Run were LPF Trustee and Lion Group Director, Datuk CS Tang; council members of The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KLSCCCI); NCSM Vice President, Ms Clare Ratnasingham; Pavilion CEO - Retail, Datuk Joyce Yap; Parkson Holdings Berhad Executive Director, Ms Natalie Cheng; and Parkson management and sponsors.

Ms Clare Ratnasingham who flagged off the 1km Run for Cancer category ran alongside with Puan Sri Chelsia and 45 cancer patients and survivors.

Prizes were awarded to the 40 winners of the various categories and 63 lucky draw prizes with a Karisma motorcycle sponsored by Modenas being the grand prize were given away to some lucky participants.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships Worth RM360,000 to University Students

Lion Group once again fulfilled its role as a caring corporate citizen when its Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM360,000 to 9 students based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities. The undergraduates who will be pursuing their bachelor’s degree in local institutions of higher learning received scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum for the duration of their studies. This is the 28th year running that the Foundation is awarding scholarships to deserving students. The awards were presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng witnessed by LPF Trustees, Datuk CS Tang, and Dr Chua Siew Kiat.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng in her speech said, “The awards are in line with our Lion Group’s aspiration to contribute to the country’s educational and human resources development in order to achieve economic growth. We hope to nurture educated and talented young Malaysians who will help to shape and build a better tomorrow for future generations.”

Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 457 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM10.7 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM27 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM37.7 million todate.

Press Conference on Lion Parkson Run 2018

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) is organizing the third Lion Parkson Run at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 22 April 2018 to raise funds for education and charity including the expansion of the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor.

The Home for special children was built at a cost of RM2.2 million contributed by LPF, on a 4.17 acres piece of land worth RM1.2 million donated by Lion Group. The funds to build the Home came from a series of TV programs in 2008 and the Million Dollar Dance Grand Finale Charity Show in February 2009, both produced by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng. The Home which can accommodate 100 children was officially opened by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and National Shuttler, Dato’ Lee Chong Wei on 4 November 2012. The expansion of the Home will be able to accommodate another 100 children and an old folks home.

Parkson Merchandising Director, Ms Natalie Cheng in her opening speech invited the general public, members of the mass media and running fraternity to join in the Run for a good cause. The Run will have two routes of 3km and 10km. The registration fee for the 10km route is RM80 whilst the fee for the 3km is RM55 and RM120 for Family Run, for a family of 2 adults and 1 child aged below 12 years old. There is also a special 1km run for cancer patients and survivors.

Lion Parkson Run 2018 was then launched by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang; LPF Trustees, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Dr Chua Siew Kiat; and Ms Natalie Cheng.

The run is targeting to attract 5,000 participants. The co-organiser is Lee Chong Wei Foundation whilst the main sponsor for the Run is Parkson, with other sponsors being Polo, Akemi, Flamoff, Hi-Rev lubricants, Hwa Tai, Venue Sponsor - Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, 988 FM – Official Radio Station and Official Drink - Spritzer.

Lion-Parkson Foundation was launched in 1990 to administer and disburse funds for various needs such as education, charity and scientific research. Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 448 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM10.4 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM24.5 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM34.9 million todate.

Briefing for Scholarships Applicants

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) organised a briefing session on 15 June 2017 for the shortlisted candidates for its scholarship awards. The session began with a presentation on Lion Group to give the students a better insight into the Group’s businesses followed by a briefing on LPF’s activities and the scholars programme by CeDR Senior Manager, Ms Penny Chong.

2012 LPF scholar, Mr Henry Liu who has graduated, currently a Finance Executive at Lion Head Office; 2013 scholar, Cik Nurhidayah Abdul Rahman and 2012 scholar, Mr Khoo Zheng Yean, both Project Executives at Property Division shared their internship and work experience with the applicants. The session also included some games to assess the students’ teamwork and leadership qualities.

2017 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

For the eighth consecutive year, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson assisted five independent schools in the Klang Valley, namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL) and Kwang Hua Private High School to organize a Chinese New Year (CNY) Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

The Charity Sale was held at 9 participating Parkson stores namely Pavilion KL, Suria KLCC, Sunway Velocity Mall, OUG Shopping Centre, IOI City Mall Putrajaya, NU Sentral, Sunway Pyramid, 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Klang Parade. The students staged Calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese orchestra performances at these Parkson stores over 2 weekends in January 2017 prior to the Lunar New Year celebration, and successfully raised RM188,308.85 from the sale of their calligraphy pieces.

On 5 April 2017, LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Datuk CS Tang; and LPF Trustee, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu presented cheques totalling RM194,628.85 to the 5 schools. This amount included the sales proceeds from the book entitled “My Cause • My Music” by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng that were donated to the students to sell at Parkson stores.

The expenses for the Calligraphy sale and performances by the students in the Parkson stores were sponsored by LPF and Parkson while the special paper for writing the Calligraphy pieces were provided by Xian’s Calligraphy Centre founded by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships Worth RM285,000

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM285,000 to 9 deserving students based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities on 22 August 2016 for the 26th year running. The undergraduates who will be pursuing their bachelor’s degree in local institutions of higher learning received scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum for the duration of their studies. The awards were presented by LPF Trustee, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu.

LPF Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat in his speech said, “The awards are in line with Lion Group’s aspiration to contribute to the country’s educational and human resources development in order to achieve economic growth. We hope to nurture talented and educated young Malaysians who will help to shape and build a better tomorrow for the future of our nation.”

Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 436 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM9.9 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM23.3 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM33.2 million todate.

Winners of Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016

The final selection of the winning pieces for Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016 was carried out in the Calligraphy, Cultural and Learning Centre in Tsinghua University in Beijing, China on 9th March 2016.

The judging was done by 4 famous calligraphers and scholars in China, namely Professor Liu Tao from China Central Academy of Arts; Professor Liu Shi from School of Humanities, Tsinghua University; Professor Du Peng Fei, Deputy Executive Director of Arts Museum, Tsinghua University; and Dr Luo San Gui, China Guang Ming Daily Deputy Director of Photography and Art Department, Senior Editor and Calligrapher. Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation was present to witness the judging and selection of winners.

Altogether, there are 10 winners from the Public category and 11 winners from the University Students category. The judges in recognising and praising the overall high standard of calligraphy in Malaysia, decided with the organizers’ agreement to award one additional Merit prize in the University Students category in view of the comparable skills of the participants.

LION-PARKSON Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016

Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016 by Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF), Tsinghua University from Beijing, China and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was held at UTAR Campus in Bandar Sungai Long, Selangor on 10 January 2016. It was launched by Senator Dato’ Dr Hou Kok Chung, Chairman of Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research witnessed by his wife, Datin Lim Mooi Lang; LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; LPF Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat; UTAR President/CEO, Professor Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik; Vice President - Internationalisation & Academic Development, Professor Dr Ewe Hong Tat; Dean of Insitute of Chinese Studies, Dr Chong Siou Wei; Professor Dr Lim Chooi Kwa; Visiting Professor from Shandong Agricultural University Professor Zhao Lixin; and Puan Sri Wendy Ong.

The competition to promote calligraphy in Malaysia attracted more than 150 participants nationwide with the oldest participant being a 75-year old gentleman from Johor. It had two categories i.e. for University/College Students (Malaysian students only), and the Public, aged 18 years and above. The top 5 winners from each category will be invited to attend a 4-day calligraphy workshop and awards presentation ceremony at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China in April this year.

54 finalists were selected by judges Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Professor Dr Lim Chooi Kwa, and calligraphers Mr Chang Moke Wah, Mr Kerk Won Hoo and Mr Chia HK on 22 January 2016 and sent to Tsinghua University in Beijing for the final selection of winners.

Launching of LION-PARKSON Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) together with Tsinghua University from Beijing, China and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) held a press conference on 10 December 2015 to launch the Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition to promote Chinese art and culture, and calligraphy in Malaysia.

LION PARKSON RUN 2015

More than 3,500 people gathered at Setia City Mall Central Park in Shah Alam on 15 November 2015 for the second Lion Parkson Run, organised by Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd and Lee Chong Wei Foundation to raise funds for Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled in Banting, under the auspices of Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF).

Group Executive Chairman, Tan Sri William Cheng and LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng flagged off the runners. Present at the Run were Lion-Parkson Foundation Trustees, Mr CS Tang and Dr Chua Siew Kiat; The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia President, Datuk Ter Leong Yap and council members of The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry; Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children Association Selangor Vice President, Mr Jeevah Murugaiyah; and Parkson Director – Merchandising, Ms Natalie Cheng, amongst others.

The run was held to raise funds to build Phases 2 and 3 of the Banting Home to accommodate another 100 children, and an orphanage and old folks home. Parkson Corporation and Lion-Parkson Fundation (LPF) held a press conference on 24 September 2015 to launch Lion Parkson Run 2015. The charity run by Parkson and Lee Chong Wei Foundation will be held at Setia City Mall Central Park in Shah Alam on 15 November 2015 to raise funds for the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor under the auspices of LPF.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarship Worth RM480,000

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM480,000 to 12 students for the 25th year running, based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities. The awards were presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng witnessed by LPF Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat; Group HR Director, Mr Suresh Menon and the students’ parents and families on 24 August 2015.

The undergraduates who are pursuing their first degree in local institutes of higher learning received scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum for the duration of their studies.

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng said in her speech that it is Lion Group’s aspiration to contribute to the country’s educational and human resources development in order to achieve economic growth.

To date, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 427 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM9.7 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM20.5 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM30.2 million.

2015 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson Corporation assisted six independent schools in Klang Valley namely Kuen Cheng, Confucian, Tsun Jin, Chong Hwa (KL), Pin Hwa and Chung Hua (Klang) to organize the 2015 Chinese New Year Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented cheques for the total amount of RM 256,483.25 to the 6 schools, witnessed by LPF Trustees, Mr CS Tang and Dr Chua Siew Kiat on 1 April 2015. This amount comprised the charity sale proceeds and LPF’s contribution of RM60,000 to the schools for their participation in Lion Parkson Run in September 2014 which was held to raise funds for the construction of phases 2 and 3 of the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting.

The students had staged Calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese orchestra performances at 11 participating Parkson stores in the Klang Valley over 3 weekends in January 2015. Lion Parkson Run 2014

About 2,500 people turned up for the inaugural Lion Parkson Run 2014 organised by Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Lee Chong Wei Foundation on 14 September 2014 despite the heavy rain.

Lion Group Executive Chairman and CEO, Tan Sri William Cheng flagged off the runners for the 10km category at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur followed by Parkson Corporation General Manager - Merchandising, Ms Natalie Cheng flagging off the participants for the 2km VIP category.

The Charity Run raised RM1.008 million which is part of the fund-raising to extend the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor which presently can accommodate 100 children. The Home was officially opened by National Shuttler, Dato’ Lee Chong Wei on 4 November 2012. It was built at a cost of RM2.2 million contributed by LPF, on a 4.17 acres piece of land worth RM1.2 million donated by Lion Group. The funds to build the Home came from a series of TV programs in 2008 and the Million Dollar Dance Grand Finale Charity Show in February 2009, both produced by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng. LPF is raising funds to build Phases 2 and 3 of the Home to accommodate another 100 children, and an orphanage and old folks home.

Lion Parkson Run 2014 To Raise Funds For Banting Home For Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) together with Lee Chong Wei Foundation will be organizing a 10km run at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur on 14 September 2014 to raise funds for the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Banting, Selangor. The run is targeting to attract 5,000 participants and raise over RM1 million for the Home.

The press conference to launch the run was attended by Lion-Parkson Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, Lion-Parkson Foundation Trustee, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Dr Chua Siew Kiat; and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd’s General Manager – Merchandising, Ms Natalie Cheng on 3 July 2014.

The Run is being held to raise funds to build Phases 2 and 3 of the Home to accommodate another 100 children, and an orphanage and old folks home. The main sponsor for the Run is Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd, with major sponsors being Diadora, Akemi, Bonia and Watatime; Oris as the official time keeper and Spritzer as the official drink.

Briefing For Scholarship Applicants

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) organised a briefing session for the shortlisted candidates for its scholarship awards on 19 June 2014. The session kicked off with a presentation of the Group’s corporate video to give the students a better insight into its business operations followed by a briefing on the Foundation’s activities and the scholars programme by CeDR Manager, Puan Siti Sahlah Ibrahim.

The highlight was a panel discussion with LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Lion Group Director and LPF Trustee, Mr CS Tang and LPF Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat on the topic ‘Young People Today: Their Dreams & Aspirations & Fears’. The panellists shared their experience and imparted invaluable advice to the students.

2012 LPF scholar, Afiqah Ariffin who is currently a Floor Executive at Parkson NuSentral store shared her internship and work experience at Parkson with the candidates. The session also included some games to assess the students’ teamwork and leadership qualities.

2014 CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson Corporation assisted six independent schools in Klang Valley namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL), Pin Hwa High School and Chung Hua Independent High School (Klang) to organize the 2014 Chinese New Year Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

The sale had successfully raised RM192,163.65 and a mock-cheque for this amount was presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng to the students witnessed by LPF Trustees, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Dr Chua Siew Kiat and the schools’ officials on 9 April 2014.

The students had staged Calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese orchestra performances at 11 participating Parkson stores in the Klang Valley over 3 weekends in January 2014. The expenses for the Calligraphy sale and performances were sponsored by LPF and Parkson while the special red paper for writing the Calligraphy pieces was provided by Xian’s Calligraphy Centre founded by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng.


Congratulations to Tsun Jin High School which raised RM56,610.00, the highest amount, from the charity sale.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships

On 22 July 2013, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) awarded scholarships totalling RM560,000 to 14 outstanding students based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities to pursue their first degree in local universities.

LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum to the students witnessed by LPF Trustee and Lion Group Director, Mr CS Tang; Director of Human Resources, Mr Suresh Menon, and the students’ parents and families. This is the 23rd year running that LPF is awarding scholarships to deserving students which will help them be free of financial constraints and better able to focus on their studies and participate in activities to develop their leadership qualities. The Group’s training division, CeDR Corporate Consulting will coach and guide the sponsored students in the areas of personal development, management and teamwork during their semester breaks.

Todate, the Foundation has sponsored a total of 388 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM8.4 million and contributed another RM17.2 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM25.6 million.

CNY Calligraphy Charity Sale

Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) successfully raised RM1,008,000 from its 4-year Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale to assist needy students in 4 independent schools in Kuala Lumpur namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School and Chong Hwa Independent High School.

A mock-cheque for the amount was presented by LPF Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng to the students from the schools witnessed by LPF Trustees, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Dr Chua Siew Kiat on 4 July 2013.

An Incentive Award of RM20,000 was given to Tsun Jin High School’s students who achieved the highest sales from their calligraphy pieces in Parkson stores in 2013 while Kuen Cheng High School’s students received the Initiative Award worth RM10,000 for their additional fund raising efforts within the school. Todate, the Foundation has helped 315 students from the 4 schools to pay for their education fees.

2013 Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale

The Lion-Parkson Foundation has been assisting four independent schools in Kuala Lumpur namely Chong Hwa Independent High School, Tsun Jin High School, Confucian Private Secondary School and Kuen Cheng High School to organize a Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale to raise funds for their needy students for a 4-year period beginning in 2010.

The launch of the 2013 Charity Sale was held at Pavilion KL on 25 January 2013 by Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; wife of the High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to Malaysia, Mrs Irene Ong and the wife of the High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, Madam Vandana Gokhale. At the launch, Pavilion KL management donated RM8,888 towards the charity sale.

The Official Opening Ceremony for the Charity Sale was held at Chong Hwa Independent High School on 26 January 2013, attended by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Foundation Trustees, Mr CS Tang and Dr Chua Siew Kiat, and officials from the four schools.

At an appreciation dinner held after the official opening, Parkson Operations Manager, Mr Lim Wee Luen presented Parkson Corporation’s contribution of RM18,888 towards the charity sale.

Parkson Cares EduCare 2012

Parkson Corporation together with Siri Jayanti Association and Yayasan Maha Karuna kicked off the Parkson Cares EduCare 2012 charity program at the KL Festival City Mall on 22 November 2012.

Launched by Lion-Parkson Foundation Trustee, Dr Chua Siew Kiat; Educare Chairman Venerable Siri Wimala and Parkson General Manager of Operations, Mr Loh Chai Hoon, the charity program saw all 39 Parkson stores nationwide acting as collection centres for customers and the public to drop off school uniforms, school bags and shoes, stationery and other essentials for needy school children across the country.

In his speech, Dr Chua says, “Parkson supports Educare which helps equip needy students with essential school items and motivates them to do well with the kind contributions and caring act displayed by the public”.

At the Handover Ceremony on 13 December 2012, Dr Chua and Mr Loh presented a mock cheque for RM12,000 being Parkson’s contribution to EduCare and handed over the collection of school items by Parkson stores to Venerable Siri Wimala.

Opening of Banting Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children

The Home for Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children built by Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) in Banting, Selangor was officially opened by National Shuttler, Dato’ Lee Chong Wei on 4 November 2012.

Rajamanikam were present at the function.

The home was built for the children who were previously staying in rented premises in Ampang Jaya, which is a branch of the Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children Association Johor Bahru. Located on a 4.17 acres piece of land worth RM1.2 million donated by the Lion Group with the construction cost of RM2.2 million borne by LPF, the home can accommodate 100 children.

The funds to build the home came from a series of TV programs in 2008 and the Million Dollar Dance Grand Finale Charity Show in February 2009, both produced by Puan Sri Chelsia, which raised RM1.9 million.

In her keynote address, Puan Sri Chelsia thanked all sponsors and donors for their kind support and generosity, the project consultants who provided complimentary services and everyone who worked so hard to make the home a reality. She also thanked Dato’ Lee Chong Wei for his kind donation of RM100,000 towards the Foundation in support of its activities.

At the event, Dato’ Ter Leong Yap, the President of the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chambers of ­Commerce and Industry, pledged RM1,000 to LPF for every successful shot returned by his seven year old son and he himself in a badminton game with Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, which netted RM26,000 for the Foundation.

Lion-Parkson Foundation Awards Scholarships

On 18 July 2012, the Lion-Parkson Foundation awarded scholarships worth RM390,000 to 12 outstanding students pursuing their first degree in local universities. This is the 22nd year running that the Foundation is awarding scholarships to deserving students.

Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng presented the scholarships worth RM10,000 each per annum to the students witnessed by their family members, Foundation Trustees Mr CS Tang, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Dr Chua Siew Kiat; and HR Director, Mr Suresh Menon.

Besides the keynote address by Puan Sri Chelsia at the event, Dr Chua Siew Kiat imparted some pertinent advice to the students for their studies and future employment. Mr Kelvin Phuan, Senior Manager of CeDR which undertakes HR training and development briefed on the Group’s internship programme and activities planned for the students during their semester breaks.

Since its launch in 1990, the Foundation has contributed a total of RM24.7 million to various charitable causes including scholarships and educational loans worth RM8 million to 378 students through various sponsorship programmes in line with the Group’s aspiration to contribute to the country’s educational and human resources development.

Briefing for Scholarships Candidates

Group HR arranged a briefing session for 29 shortlisted candidates for the Lion-Parkson Foundation scholarships on 19 June 2012. This was held prior to the final interviews scheduled for the following day on 20 June 2012.

The candidates viewed the corporate video for insights into the Group’s business activities followed by a briefing on the Foundation’s Scholars Programme and the Terms of Acceptance. The candidates participated in the learning activity on team collaboration where they were able to demonstrate their team spirit and leadership abilities.

Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale

For the third consecutive year, Lion-Parkson Foundation organised a Lunar New Year Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale to assist four independent schools in Kuala Lumpur, namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Chong Hwa Independent High School and Tsun Jin High School to raise funds for their needy students.

The launch of the Charity Sale was held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 12 January 2012 by Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and the wife of the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Madam Zhang Ru Fen. At the launch, Pavilion KL management donated RM8,888.00 while Xian’s Place, a Calligraphy Centre by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and friends, donated RM49,800.00 towards the charity sale.

The official opening ceremony of the calligraphy exhibition and sale at Tsun Jin High School on 14 January 2012 was graced by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Lion Group Chairman & CEO, Tan Sri William Cheng; Foundation Trustees, Madam Gooi Sui Guet and Dr Chua Siew Kiat, and officials and students from the four schools.

Nine Parkson outlets namely Pavilion KL, Suria KLCC, KL Festival City Mall, Putra Mall, OUG Shopping Centre, Selayang Mall, Subang Parade, Sunway Pyramid and 1Utama Shopping Centre participated in the calligraphy sale with Chinese orchestra performances by the students from the four schools in their stores over two weeks.

Mr Zi Qing, a calligrapher from Beijing was specially invited to display his calligraphy and seal carving skills to raise funds for the charity sale which raised a total of RM250,000.00 in aid of education.

Launching of Parkson Cares Educare 2011

Lion-Parkson Foundation and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd launched the Parkson Cares Educare 2011 at KL Festival City Mall in Setapak on 26 November 2011. This is the 11th consecutive year that Parkson is participating in the Educare programme which ties in with its yearly Back-To-School Charity Drive for the public to buy and contribute school supplies such as school uniforms, bags, shoes, stationeries and exercise books for needy school children in Malaysia.

The launching was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Education, YB Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong; Lion-Parkson Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and Educare Chairman, Venerable Siri Wimala.

In her speech at the launching of Parkson Cares Educare 2011, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng said, “Parkson supports Educare which helps to equip needy students with essential school items and motivates them to do well with the kind contributions and act of caring displayed by the public. This will certainly encourage the students in their education and use the opportunities provided to improve themselves in order to have a brighter future.”

At the launching ceremony, Lion-Parkson Foundation and Parkson Corporation presented a cheque for RM25,000 and RM12,000 respectively to Venerable Siri Wimala for Educare 2011.

Educare will not only help to reduce the financial burden of parents to purchase essential school items for their children for the coming new school term but also brings hope to many families.

For the 21st year running, the Lion-Parkson Foundation awarded scholarships and educational loans to 6 deserving students. The awards were presented by Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng on 4 August 2011.

Of the 6 students pursuing their education in local universities, three received scholarships worth RM12,000 each while another 3 received interest-free educational loans, each valued at RM8,000 per year. The loans will be converted to scholarships in the event the students come back to work for the Lion Group upon their graduation.

In her speech, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng said “We hope that our contribution will help students be free of financial constraints and be able to focus on thir studies and participate in activities to develop their leadership qualities".

Chinese New Year Calligrapy Exhibition Cum Charity Sale To Raise Funds For Needy Students In Independent Schools

The Foundation assisted four independent schools in Kuala Lumpur to organize a Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition cum Charity Sale to raise funds for needy students in these schools, for the second year.

The roadshow to promote the Calligraphy Charity Sale with Chinese Orchestra performances by the students from the four schools was held in nine Parkson outlets in the Klang Valley.

The final exhibition was held at Confucian Private Secondary School Kuala Lumpur on 21 and 22 January 2011. It featured pieces by renowned calligrapher, Mr Kerk Won Hoo, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and fellow students who are taking lessons under Mr Kerk, as well as pieces by the students from the four schools.

Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition

The Foundation will again be assisting 4 independent schools in Kuala Lumpur to organise a Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition in January 2011 to raise funds for needy students in these schools.

The 3-day exhibition will be held at selected Parkson outlets in the Klang Valley with the final day to be at Confucian Private Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur.

Parkson Cares Educare

Parkson Cares Educare 2010 was launched by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and Chief High Priest of Malaysia, Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera on 4 December 2010 at Parkson OUG to collect school essentials such as school bags, uniforms, shoes etc for distribution to needy school children.

This is 10th consecutive year Educare is jointly organized by Siri Jayanti Association and Yayasan Maha Karuna assisted by Parkson Corporation and Lion-Parkson Foundation, to benefit 8,000 needy students from 300 government schools, orphanages and NGOs. Todate the programme has helped 32,900 poor students.

Groundbreaking Ceremony For Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children’s Home

The Foundation is helping the Handicapped And Mentally Disabled Children Association Johor Bahru to build a home in Banting, Selangor, for special children. The home will be built in 2 phases on a 4.17 acre piece of land contributed by The Lion Group.

The 1st phase will provide accommodation, training and recreational facilities for 110 children which is expected to be completed in 2012. The groundbreaking was held on 30 October 2010 and officiated by Lion-Parkson Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Association Johor Bahru Chairman, Tuan Haji Mohd Farid Bin Dato’ O/K Haji Hassan and Vice-President, Mr S Jeevah; Lion Group Chairman & CEO, Tan Sri William Cheng and Foundation Trustee and Group Director, Mr CS Tang.

Megasteel Scholarships Presentation Ceremony

The Foundation held an awards ceremony on 25 August 2010 whereby Megasteel Sdn Bhd presented scholarships totalling RM1.08 million to 13 diploma-holders to study Engineering in University of Science & Technology Beijing (USTB), China.

The 2-year degree course in USTB involves classroom-based studies and practical training at steel mills in China.

Of the 9 students, 3 received scholarships worth RM12,000 each per year while another 6 received interest-free educational loans, each valued at RM8,000 per year.

This is the 21st year running that the Foundation is presenting awards to deserving students. Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng who presented the awards to the students said in her speech, "We hope that our contribution will help students be free of financial constraints and be able to focus on the pursuit of excellence; not only in terms of academic achievement but also in terms of leadership qualities and other personable qualities with single-minded commitment".

Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition

The Lion-Parkson Foundation assisted 4 independent schools in Kuala Lumpur to organize a Chinese New Year Calligraphy Exhibition from 30 January to 1 February 2010 to raise funds for needy students in these schools.

The 3-day exhibition held at Kuen Cheng High School in Jalan Syed Putra, Kuala Lumpur featured over 1,000 pieces of calligraphy works and Chinese brush-paintings by renowned calligrapher, Mr Kerk Won Hoo and his students, as well as students and teachers from the four schools.

Educare

Lion-Parkson Foundation collaborated with Siri Jayanti Association and Yayasan Maha Karuna on Educare 2009, a charitable programme which distributes essential school items to needy school children throughout the country. Educare 2009 was launched by Women, Family and Community Development Ministry’s Social Welfare Department Director General, Datuk Meme Zainal Rashid on 29 November 2009.

For the past 9 years, Parkson has been involved in this programme whereby all its stores nationwide provide collection bins for the public to donate school items.

In her speech, Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng related her experience in visiting a home for the handicapped and mentally disabled children which inspired her to help these special children by publishing a book, ‘Hot Dog Society’. The book which is filled with inspirational quotes and heartwarming stories is on sale at all Parkson outlets with 30% of the sales proceeds donated to Educare 2009.

At the event, Silverstone Marketing Sdn Bhd contributed RM15,000 to the programme. Its Director, Mr Paul Chan presented the mock cheque to Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera, Chief High Priest of Malaysia.

On 28 December 2009, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng handed over Parkson’s Educare collection worth RM95,566 to Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera.

Launching of Lion-Parkson Foundation Website

Lion-Parkson Foundation’s website, www.lion-parksonfoundation.com.my was unveiled on 29 November 2009 by Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and Foundation Trustees, Mr CS Tang, Dr Yulduz Emiloglu and Madam Gooi Sui Guet.

Designed by Puan Sri’s daughter, Serena Cheng, the website features a rising sun spreading its rays which symbolises the giving of hope and extending assistance to the less fortunate.

The website has information on the foundation’s objectives and activities, scholarships and loans available to students and job vacancies in our Group of companies. It will also incorporate a database on the Foundation’s scholars which will allow them to network, contribute ideas and act as role models for those still pursuing their studies.

The launch was attended by some of the scholars and their family members.

Donation to BAKTI (Association of Wives of Ministers & Deputy Ministers)

Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng handed over the Foundation’s contribution to BAKTI Chairman, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, for disaster victims in Indonesia and the Philippines as well as the refugees in Palestine.

The Foundation awarded financial assistance totalling RM224,000 to 8 students pursuing their education in local universities based on their academic performance, extra-curricular activities and leadership qualities, on 22 June 2009. Of the 8 students, two received scholarships while another six received interest-free educational loans, each valued at RM7,000 per year.

A Million Dollar Dance Grand Finale Charity Show

The `A Million Dollar Dance Grand Finale Charity Show’ was staged by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng on 8 February 2009 at the Bintang Circle, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur to raise funds to build a home for handicapped and mentally disabled children. Through the belly dance performance by Puan Sri accompanied by her daughter, Nathalie Cheng and two other dancers, with guest performances by Roger Kwok of Hong Kong and Jeffrey from Malaysia, the charity show raised RM1.9 million to help build a home cum learning centre for the special children.

Lessons for Dreams to Life

A series of 11 TV episodes consisting of interviews by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng with various prominent corporate figures and personalities was broadcasted on TVB8 from October until December 2008. Each episode showcased a business organization and the person(s) behind it and raised a total of RM130,000 for charity from the sponsorship by these organizations. Some of the corporations that were featured were Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Eu Yang Sang (1959) Sdn Bhd, IOI Properties Bhd, Mines Resort City, Estee Lauder, Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd and Silverstone Berhad.

Parkson Charity Music Festival

The Foundation staged the Parkson Charity Music Festival at Stadium Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on 29 October 2006 to raise funds for education. It was organized by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and saw a line-up of international artistes from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore as well as Malaysia who performed for charity. The concert was produced by TVB8 Hong Kong and was broadcasted live in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, with delayed telecast to Taiwan, Canada, the United States of America and Europe.
